One thing that has become evident in the recent months is the increase of malware on the computers that have come in for repair. Although these repairs keep us quite busy, we feel it is also in our best interest to keep everyone informed of what they can do to avoid costly repairs and downtime. The first step to this process is to understand what to avoid in the first place.
Truthfully malware, viruses, rootkits, spyware, adware exist all over the Internet. These are what slow your computer down or disable it depending on how powerful they are and where they embed themselves in the computer. Some malware even has the ability to steal personal information and data as well.
Knowing what to do is another key to avoiding “the nasties," as we so fondly call them. Many times a pop-up will appear on the screen saying there are issues with the computer and click here to fix them. Step one is not to click anywhere on the window. Instead close it by right clicking on the taskbar and clicking on close. If that will not work hold down the control, alt and delete keys at the same time this should open the task manager. Once you have that open shut off the application that is associated with that window. This should stop the malware from getting further into your computer without any harm. Other safety precautions you can take is keeping the operating system up to date and using an antivirus/spyware/firewall program and keeping it up to date as well.
Monitor your children’s use and use filtering software or services that prevent them from surfing to questionable sites. OpenDNS is one option. More information can be found at www.opendns.com Children are curious by nature and where that leads to can be a very damaging in just a few clicks. Online e-mail accounts such as Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail etc… are often targets for spam and other such activities that harbor malware. Just be aware of what you are clicking on. Social Networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and the likes are also very common places to find undesirable downloads. Key thing to remember is if it looks suspicious delete it, do not open it.
We realize even the safest practices will not keep all malware away so in the event of a major malfunction it is best to keep all your most important files, documents, photos and music backed up regularly on a USB drive or external hard drive.
If your system does need a restore from the square one you will still have the data to put back once you are up and running again. Please feel free to stop by and ask any questions or get a demonstration on what has been covered in this newsletter.
